1. Study organisation and structure
When do classes start in the summer semester 2025?
Classes for the W- , M- and T-courses begin in April for the summer semester.
When do classes start in the winter semester 2025?
Classes for the W- , M- and T- courses begin in the winter semester 2025 in October.
Do the lessons take place online or in person?
We endeavour to offer lessons constantly in person - in a few exceptional situations, however, they may also take place online at times.
Is the study centre private or state-run?
We are a private study centre, which is why we charge a course fee.
Which courses can I attend?
You can either attend a T-course (for technical-mathematical degree programmes/MINT subjects), a W-course (for economics or social science degree programmes), an M-course (for medical and biological degree programmes).
In which language do the courses take place?
The language of instruction in all subjects is German, except for English, which is taught in English.
2. Examinations and course of study
Is there an entrance exam?
No, you do not have to take an entrance exam. As soon as you have received your admission certificate, you are registered for the relevant course.
What is the FSP?
The final examination is called the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) and takes place after approximately eight months of the course. If your course starts in April (summer semester), the FSP takes place in December/January; if your course starts in October (winter semester), the FSP takes place in June/July.
The Thuringian ordinance on course content, requirements and procedures for the assessment test at the Studienkolleg in accordance with §92 Para. of the Thuringian Higher Education Act (ThürFSPVO).
Where does the FSP take place?
The FSP is taken internally. The teachers who have accompanied you for two semesters will also examine you.
When do I have to repeat a semester?
If your performance is not sufficient for transfer to the next semester / participation in the FSP, you have the option of repeating the semester in question. The exact conditions under which a semester must be repeated can be found in the Thuringian ordinance on teaching content, requirements and procedures for the assessment test at the Studienkolleg.
Are there grades?
Yes, performances such as written exams, tests, homework and oral participation are graded.
3. Application and requirements
What documents are required?
We need a copy of your passport, a German B1 certificate (or higher), as well as your school leaving certificate (original and certified translation in German or English).
Do I need English language skills?
The subject matter is taught at A-level. Appropriate prior knowledge is assumed.
Will my chances of getting a place at the Studienkolleg increase if I apply as early as possible?
Yes, the sooner you apply, the better your chances of getting a place on our course.
4. Costs and financing
How much do the courses cost?
The T-, W- and M- courses each cost €8,000 for direct applicants; participants in the S-special procedure should enquire about prices and further information separately.
What other costs should I expect?
You will need to budget for the cost of rent and Wi-Fi, living expenses (food, drinks), health insurance, materials for classes and, if you are not enrolled at the university, the use of public transport (bus, train).
Are the examination costs already included in the course fees?
No, the costs for the written/oral FSP are not included in the course fees. They must be paid separately.
Do I receive benefits as a prospective student?
If you attend a course with us, we recommend that you enrol at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena at the same time. This will give you student status and entitle you to many benefits, such as the semester ticket for free use of public transport and the sports facilities of the EAH Jena and FSU Jena, as well as library access at the EAH Jena. You can also use your student ID card to eat at reduced prices in the EAH Jena canteens.
5. Everyday study life and future prospects
Can I live in a student accommodation?
When you enrol at Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences, you can also apply for a place in student accommodation. Many of our students currently live in student accommodation.
Can I have a job alongside my lessons?
During your stay at the Studienkolleg, you may be able to work part-time with the work permit issued by the Foreigners' Registration Office, but you will not have enough time for this alongside your attendance at the Studienkolleg, nor would the income from this cover the cost of living and the fees for the Studienkolleg. In addition, you are currently preparing for your studies. This means that you are generally only allowed to work during the holidays.
Where can I study after passing the FSP?
If you have passed the T-, W- or M-course, you can study at any German university. However, successful graduates of the Studienkolleg are exclusively guaranteed a place at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena. This means that you have a guaranteed place on various Bachelor's degree programmes and can also apply (as a direct applicant) to any university in Germany.
